Georgetown College Knocks Off No. 8 Martin Methodist

(15) Georgetown College 89
(8) Martin Methodist 86 F/OT

Final from Georgetown, Kentucky

Game recap by GC:

Georgetown College men's basketball team had a brief moment when the team let No. 8 Martin Methodist take control. Right before the half the Redhawks (9-1) went on a 20-2 run. Georgetown responded in the final 20 minutes to force overtime and hand MMC its first loss of the season 89-86 Saturday at Davis-Reid Alumni Gym.

A huge spark plug in the second half was Winchester, Ky. native Bopper Stenzel. The sophomore had seven of his 10 points and seven of his nine assists. The No. 15 Tigers (12-2) needed a late three from Noah Cottrill, who finished with a game-high 25 points, to force the extra five minutes.

"We were not pleased with the way we finished that first 20 minutes," said GC coach Chris Briggs. "We knew we were better than that and we showed it in the second half. Bopper really supplied energy and the rest of the team got rolling."

Deondre McWhorter tallied another double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds and Gerard Coleman came off the bench for 11 points.

GC went from shooting a mild 35.5 percent from the field to a blistering 62.5 in the second half and overtime.

Martin Methodist was steady at 42 percent each half and led by Darius Forrest's 23 points. Monte Burney added 17, Darius Woods 12 and Ryan Donald 11.

Georgetown does not return to action until after the New Year.
