Hendrix Upsets Centre College in SAA Semifinals

Hendrix 55

Centre 53

Final from Memphis, Tennessee

Game recap by CC:

After 10 straight wins and a Southern Athletic Association regular season crown, the Centre men's basketball team suffered an upset loss to sixth-seeded Hendrix in a Southern Athletic Association Tournament semifinal, falling 55-53 on Saturday in Memphis, Tenn.

The Colonels came into the game having beaten the Warriors in the last four meetings and 23 of the last 24, including a 70-41 win in the teams' last matchup earlier this month in Danville. The result also marks the first time since 2005 that Centre was eliminated before a conference championship game.

The game was back-and-forth throughout, with 15 lead changes, five ties, and neither team reaching a lead of more than eight points. The Colonels took a 53-50 lead on a Blake Scinta (Louisville, Ky.) layup with 3:15 to play, but came up empty on their final four possessions.

Hendrix pulled within one point on a Gearen Littlefield layup just inside the 2:00 mark, then took the lead for good when Drew Nikolovski made a 3-pointer with 1:03 left for his only points of the game. A Centre layup with 27 seconds left missed the mark, and though the Warriors' Hank Aldous missed the front end of a one-and-one on the other end, Centre came up empty on three shot attempts on its final possession before time expired.

The Colonels' Matt Gump (Bellefontaine, Ohio) led all players with 17 points while Scinta added 13 points with a game-high 10 rebounds. Aldous topped Hendrix with 12 points.

The first half was closely contested, with the largest lead either team would hold coming when Centre went up 4-0 after a pair of Josh Karsner (Frankfort, Ky.) free throws and a Gump layup. Centre also scored the last four points of the half to take a 30-27 lead to the break, only to see Hendrix come out with the first four points of the second half.
