John Calipari, Frank Martin Support Removal of Confederate Flag

Kentucky head coach John Calipari and South Carolina head man Frank Martin have both publicly stated that they support removal of the confederate flag.

Calipari was asked on the SEC Teleconference earlier today to give his thoughts on the matter:

On his thoughts about the hanging of the confederate flag and statues throughout the South …

“Really? Obviously, it offends a portion of our society, so people are deciding to take them down. That’s how I feel.”

On if he would support taking them down …

“Sure. They offend, and I would say do it, yeah. Does our state use the Confederate flag, Jerry? (Reporter: There’s a statue of a confederate general at the old courthouse in Lexington and a statue of Jefferson Davis at the capital in Frankfort). Wow. Since I’m not running for public office, I will let the powers that be decide those matters. I was thinking about running for president, and I was discouraged from that.”

Calipari later clarified his comments on social media:
Was just asked a question on a basketball conference call about the confederate flag. I don’t want any confusion. I think we should take it down! I don’t think there’s any question it should be taken down, but again, I’m not running for office.

Martin had this say on his Twitter account earlier this week:

Calipari has received a great deal of criticism on his Facebook page. Check out these comments (via John Clay of the Herald-Leader):

– Johnda Wilburn Griffith: “Well this is 1 thing you are definately wrong about. Stick to picking the best players.”

– John Strode: “Just keep distancing yourself from the fan base by answering questions you really should pass on, just because you’re in the public eye doesn’t mean you have to answer every question you’re asked and it’s sometimes better to keep you’re opinion to yourself especially when it has to do with things close to the heart of the people whose basketball program you run and it’s not a good idea to alienate yourself from the fan base!”

– Bucky Bryant: “Coach Cal? Your in Kentucky! Heritage NOT Hate! Maybe a tour of Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site, and other Civil War Battlefields, needs to be on your agenda, this summer! Then you’ll understand the pride, that many Kentuckians share with this flag and our Confederate heritage! Thank you!”
