Former MSU, USM Assistant Jareem Dowling to Start New Basketball Program at Scotland Performance Institute

Former Morehead State and Southern Miss assistant Jareem Dowling will be back on the sidelines soon as the new head coach of Scotland Performance Institute, a prep school in southern Pennsylvania.

Dowling will be tasked with building the SPI program from ground up.

Currently, the school is made up of only basketball players who live in dorms and share the campus with other alternative schools.

Dowling's team will play about 35 games this year against other prep schools, some junior colleges and high school teams.

Here are more details from VirginIslandDailyNews.com:

When Jareem Dowling interviewed as a head coaching candidate at his alma mater a few years back, one of the factors working against him was a lack of head coaching experience.

But after a trying year and a successful summer, that is no longer the case.

Dowling of St. Croix will be back on campus for the first day of school today, starting his own basketball program at the Scotland Performance Institute in southern Pennsylvania.

"Who knows, this might be a blessing in disguise," Dowling said Monday night, as he prepared for the first day. "I look at it as a positive. One thing that was asked of me in that interview was I never ran a program, I've never been a head coach for a whole year.

"Now I'll have that head coaching experience."

It wasn't the route he envisioned a year ago when he left his assistant coaching position at Southern Mississippi after two years to join Donnie Tyndall's staff at the University of Tennessee, where he was hired after a successful run as Dowling's boss with the Golden Eagles.

Dowling didn't stay in Knoxville long, changing his mind and heading back to USM for a season under new head coach Doc Sadler.

Southern Mississippi announced before the season started, however, that the NCAA was investigating the basketball program for possible violations during's Tyndall's tenure.

Because of the investigation, Tyndall was fired by Tennessee shortly after his first season. A few days later, Dowling resigned at USM. He has since denied any wrongdoing.
