Georgetown College Hammers Central Penn in Season-Opener

(6) Georgetown College 117
Central Penn 61

Final from Georgetown, Kentucky

Game recap by GC:

Georgetown College men's basketball got the 2015-16 season started right. On the day the first set of rankings were released the No. 6 Tigers (1-0) handed visiting Central Penn College a 117-61 loss. They had a balanced attack and a stingy defense to hand the Knights the almost doubled-up setback.

"I am very pleased with our defensive focus and our energy and effort," said GC coach Chris Briggs. "WE are getting very good leadership from our returning guys, and they are really showing our newcomers what we need and what we expect."

Seniors Noah Cottrill and Deondre McWhorter led the way in points with 18 and 17 respectively. Jordan Green, 13; Trent Gilbert, 11; and Chris Coffey, 11, also had good showings for their first outing in the Tiger Orange & Black.

"All the new guys are still figuring things out, but it is a process," Briggs said. "They are really doing pretty well with things."

Georgetown had 15 steals, forced 27 turnovers and grabbed 26 defensive rebounds to limit CPC to just 36.5 percent from the field.

The Knights came out swinging and grabbed a quick 4-0 lead. It was a 24-10 run from there for the first double-digit lead that GC never relinquished.

The Tigers shared the wealth with 27 assists on 42 baskets, 11 from three-point range. Cottrill netted four from deep, while Gilbert had three. Tony Kimbro, Troy Stewart, Terry Rose and Anthony Sharp each had one.

"This is a very talented and athletic group that is fun to watch and coach," Briggs said.

Next chance to catch the Tigers in action is 7 pm Friday against Miami University-Middletown.
