EKU's Nick Mayo Named OVC Freshman of the Week for Sixth Time

Eastern Kentucky University's Nick Mayo has been named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week for the sixth time this season.

PLAYER

Burak Eslik, G • Jr., 6-4, 185 • Istanbul, Turkey • SIUE

Eslik averaged 30.5 points and 3.0 rebounds/game while hitting 51.5 percent (17-of-33) from the field, 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from 3-point range and 82.6 percent (19-of-23) from the free throw line as SIUE split a pair of home games. Eslik, the transfer from Lewis and Clark College, scored an OVC single-game season-best 40 points in a three-point overtime loss to Morehead State to open the week. The junior started that contest by hitting seven 3-pointers in the first seven minutes of the game as the team led 22-5. The 40 points were the most by an SIUE player in the program’s Division I Era. In that game he also pulled down six rebounds and had a steal in playing the full 45 minutes. Two days later he scored 21 points in the team’s two-point win over Eastern Kentucky. In that contest Eslik connected on 10-of-10 free throws including three in the final 18 seconds to lift the Cougars to its first OVC win of the season. Eslik currently ranks eighth in the OVC in scoring (14.8 points/game).

FRESHMAN

Nick Mayo, F • Fr., 6-9, 220 • Oakland, Maine • Eastern Kentucky

Mayo averaged 25.5 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.0 blocks/game while hitting 73.1 percent (19-of-26) from the field and 80 percent (12-of-15) from the free throw line in a pair of road games last week. He set a pair of season scoring bests last week in netting 23 points to open the week at Eastern Illinois and then scoring 28 points at SIUE. At EIU he hit 9-of-12 field goal attempts and added four rebounds and an assist. Two days later he connected on 10-of-14 field goals (including 1-of-1 3-pointers) while adding three rebounds and two blocks. Mayo now ranks fourth in the OVC in field goal percentage (60.3%) and leads all OVC freshmen in scoring at 13.7 points/game. It marks the sixth time this season he has been named OVC Freshman of the Week.
